Gratis, Ohio is a small village located in Preble County, Ohio. It was founded in the early 19th century and was originally known as "Windsor". However, in 1869, the name was changed to Gratis, which is the Latin word for "free". The village is home to approximately 1,000 residents and has a rural, small-town feel. Gratis is known for its annual 4th of July celebration and its historic buildings, including the Gratis Opera House which was built in 1891 and is still in use today.
